University of Colombo Introduces Training Program in Clinical Genetics for Non-Geneticist Medical Professionals

Read below to learn how the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka is educating local medical professionals on core concepts in clinical genetics and genomics and their applications in medicine and healthcare.

With a view to improving the genomic literacy among non-geneticist medical professionals in Sri Lanka, the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, introduced a 3-month hybrid training course on the clinical applications of genetics and genomics in healthcare, in January 2021. Fourteen doctors were trained last year, and another 10 more commenced their training in January 2022. The course is conducted twice a year by a team of local experts in the field of genomic medicine and comprises of 2-hour online lectures twice a week via the Zoom platform and monthly on-site clinical sessions involving case-based discussions at the genetics clinic.  

This three-month course aims to provide an in-depth understanding and knowledge of the core concepts in clinical genetics and genomics and their applications in medicine and healthcare. It provides training in understanding the effects of chromosomal abnormalities and genetic variations on human health and disease, the use of clinical evaluation and genetic testing in the diagnosis of genetic disorders and risk estimation, selecting appropriate genetic and genome-level diagnostic tests, interpreting test results and providing accurate genetic information and advice to patients, their families and the public at large.  

The contents are covered under 3 modules with pre- and post-module quizzes for each module:

  • Module 1: Basic Cytogenetics & Molecular Genetics
  • Module 2: Genetic Diagnostics & Ethical issues
  • Module 3: Genomic Medicine & Genetic Counselling

A certificate of completion is awarded to trainees who successfully complete the final assessment which comprises of a theory paper with multiple choice questions and an objective structured practical examination.

The participants include general medical practitioners as well as medical professionals from various clinical specialties across the country. The training provides them a valuable opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills in the day-to-day applications of genetics and genomics in the clinical setting.
