Announcing New G2MC Young Investigator Subcommittee
G2MC leadership is excited to announce the formation of a Young Investigator Subcommittee. Since the formation of G2MC, young investigators in the field of genomic medicine have made significant contributions to the organization’s mission and efforts. The enthusiasm that this group brings to the organization embodies the essence of G2MC and the vision shared by its members.
The subcommittee will be co-chaired by Dr. Nirmala Sirisena with the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, and Ms. Stefania Koutsilieri, with the University of Patras, Greece. Both currently serve as young investigator representatives on the G2MC Steering Committee and will lead the subcommittee under the mentorship of G2MC Co-Chair Dr. George Patrinos. What's Happening in G2MC
5th Global Genomic Medicine Conference - a "Virtual" Success
In May 2020, G2MC held its 5th Global Genomic Medicine Conference, virtually. The conference was originally planned to take place in Santiago, Chile, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the G2MC leadership team made the decision to hold an abbreviated virtual conference as a prelude to the face-to-face conference, postponed until 2021. Through the tireless efforts of conference organizers and speakers, the virtual conference was executed successfully and reached far more participants than would have been possible with the in-person conference.
Executive Team Member, Prof. Vajira H.W. Dissanayake, elected Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo
As the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka celebrated its 150th anniversary on June 1, they also welcomed Prof. Vajira H.W. Dissanayake as their 17th Dean to head the faculty. Prof. Dissanayake currently serves on the G2MC Executive Team and has been significantly involved in G2MC working group and flagship project efforts in addition to his leadership contributions. He specializes in genetics, genomics, and biomedical informatics, and is currently involved in the COVID-19 efforts in Sri Lanka.
Latest from the G2MC Working Groups
G2MC Working Groups were formed to focus on specific initiatives critical to advancing the G2MC mission while supporting the activities of developing G2MC Flagship Projects. During the 5th Global Genomic Medicine Virtual Conference, the Education, Policy, and Evidence Working Groups held individual breakout sessions to provide updates, share ideas, and form collaborations with interested participants. G2MC Flagship Projects Updates
G2MC Flagship Projects are formed to address implementation and pragmatic clinical trial design of evidence-based genomic medicine, with a focus on underserved settings. Flagship Projects operate independently, but their efforts are supported by the G2MC Working Groups. Currently, three main projects on the following topics are underway or in development: Family Health History, Rare Diseases, and Pharmacogenetics. This article explores lessons learned from moving two human genetics and genomics meetings, the Human Genome Meeting (HMG) and the Global Genomics Medicine Collaborative (G2MC), quickly to an online format in early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cohort studies that follow populations over years have quickly pivoted to trace the physical, mental and social consequences of COVID-19. The following article published in the scientific journal Nature highlights the involvement of the International HundredK+ Cohorts Consortium (IHCC) towards this effort.
